Reading in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is at a critical crossroads with regards to youth literacy. In a nation of more than 108 million people where 63% of the population is under 24 years old, the development of youth is crucial to the development of the nation. It is an unfortunate fact that the country’s literacy rate for those age 15 and older is only 49% (2015 est.). Meanwhile, many schools lack libraries and sometimes more than 180 students must share a classroom in order to receive any kind of education.

While Ethiopia is faced with a literacy crisis, it also has an opportunity to create a newfound reading culture that can fundamentally transform the nation’s culture and economy. Studies show that access to books in the home, no matter what socio-economic status the family, leads to higher academic achievement. In a competitive knowledge-based economy around the globe, Ethiopia is behind. Nonetheless, its way forward is clear: to invest in the access to books.

Therefore, Enanbib, Enabib! presents a number of projects and initiatives by which book culture is to be promoted in Ethiopia through the following steps:

  1. Promoting reading throughout the nation.
  2. Expanding reading rooms, access to books, and libraries throughout the nation.
  3. Making Ethiopia recognized as the reading capital of the world.
  4. Engaging the youth in creating equity of narratives throughout the nation.
  5. Launching a knowledge mega project that aims at transforming Ethiopia into an inclusive, cooperative, and unified nation where diversity of narratives is celebrated.
